According to new reports, this year’s Call of Duty is set in the Cold War era.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, as clunky as that sounds, is apparently the name of this year’s unannounced Call of Duty game. That’s according to known leaker @Okami13_.

The proven Twitter personality shared a cover art of the original Black Ops, with the words “Cold War” photo-shopped under the name. Eurogamer backed this up with its own sources, saying that the game is indeed called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

The site also says Treyarch is the studio behind it, as earlier reports suggested. Other industry insiders also said the game will encompass the Vietnam War, at least in some way.

Interestingly, Eurogamer says the current Easter eggs in Warzone about locked bunkers and mysterious Russian communiques are meant to be leading up to the official reveal of Black Ops Cold War. The Verdansk map is itself full of references to real-world Eastern Bloc scenery from the Cold War era, so it all lines up.

Call of Duty games are typically revealed around May of every year, but things will probably be different this year. For one thing, there’s the whole coronavirus situation.

Then there’s the fact Warzone, and constant Modern Warfare updates, have kept players engaged with last year’s Call of Duty well past release. Interest in the old Call of Duty typically dies down right around the time a new one is announced.

Interesting take on what era the game is. All these games are really fiction, I guess. You could make them look like one era or another. There could be references to a real-world this or that. Even with that, much of history is mysteriously hidden or forgotten.
